PROSTATE CANCER CLIMB Bio
"My initial interest was based on my lifetime ambition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, and I felt it was for a great cause," said Siobhan, one of four women climbers on the Kilimanjaro team. "However, once I started mentioning to my patients what were endeavouring to do, I was startled at the amount of individuals who had had their lives directly affected by this devastating, but highly preventable disease." Siobhan says there are no bona fide prostate cancer support groups in Ireland and that very few services are available for the men who've been diagnosed, or for their families. Much of this problem is due to the financial constraints of the Irish Cancer Society, which is trying to fight all forms of cancer in the country on limited resources, she says. "Thus my participation in this climb is to help raise money to allow for further research and raise awareness worldwide about the importance of early detection and intervention."
Proceeds of the Prostate Cancer Climb will go exclusively to funding education and research. Distribution of the Hap Weyman Memorial Prostate Cancer Project Fund will be determined by the Independent Educational Research Funding Committee (IERFC). |
