PROSTATE CANCER CLIMB Bio
Being the son of two physicians and having worked in cancer research, Erdem appreciates the endeavors of modern medicine. But he also knows progress only can be achieved when there is broad support for biomedical research. Erdem has many reasons for wanting to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. I am a friend of Bruce Hestad and his family, who is taking part in the prostate cancer climb as a prostate cancer survivor, said Erdem, who took part in the May, 2003 Prostate Cancer Climb up Mt. Whitney, California with Bruce Hestad, Darren Paul and John Loesing. Bruce and I first met in 1988 when I came to the U.S. for a year as an exchange student from Germany. The Hestads accepted me to their family as son and a brother. For me there are two reasons why I want to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. For one, I want to increase awareness for the necessity to support medical research by actively raising money for it. The latter reason is my bond to the Hestad family. I want Bruce to be a companion on this quest. I want to show him that I care about him and this disease and in this way return some of the love that was given to me by his family.
Proceeds of the Prostate Cancer Climb will go exclusively to funding education and research. Distribution of the Hap Weyman Memorial Prostate Cancer Project Fund will be determined by the Independent Educational Research Funding Committee (IERFC). |
