Prostate Cancer Climb - My Prostate Cancer Story
by Ken Malik

I’m one of the new generation of men afflicted with prostate cancer. I’m the one (1) in five (5) now diagnosed with the disease at 60 years of age or less. I was diagnosed immediately following my 50th birthday almost 6 years ago. I’ll never forget that day, April 8, 1995, what a shock! I had bouts of recurrent prostatitis, and higher than normal PSA readings, but didn’t pay much attention to these early warning signals. I knew that the prostate had something to do with my sexuality but did not know it’s exact whereabouts on my anatomy, or it’s true function. I think my attitudes and ideas about prostate health at the time were pretty typical of men all over. Most men don’t like to talk about these kinds of concerns.

I hope the climbing of Mt Aconcagua will not only be an inspirational message to men and their families that there is life after diagnosis. It should also be a signal alert for men of all ages to take the proactive steps necessary to prevent the disease in the first place. I feel a special concern about the generations to follow. I have a son of 26, and a grandson of 5. I’ve learned in my research that relatives of men diagnosed under 50 have a 16 times greater risk of contacting the disease!

Since my diagnosis 5 1/2 years ago I have been following what I call an “Aggressive Watchful Waiting” protocol. I have been integrating both conventional and alternative medicine. I have been using conventional medicine for monitoring my progress, with frequent PSA and ultrasound testing. My proactive protocol includes a strict low fat non-dairy diet, Qi Gong meditation, daily exercise, and the use of vitamins, herb’s, and supplements. I started a support group once I learned that cancer patients live twice as long when in a support group setting. Our group has evolved into the Prostate Awareness Foundation. My goal at the beginning of this regiment was to enhance my immune system and hopefully slow disease progression. To date, I have had great success. One of my two tumors has disappeared, the other is no longer palpable and is 1/2 it’s original size!

About a year after my diagnosis while still in a state of depression, I happened to see a PBS documentary called “Expedition Inspiration”. It was about a group of breast cancer survivors who climbed Mt Aconcagua. It was a moving and emotional experience for me. It gave me the hope, and resolve to carry on. Soon afterwards, on a spontaneous hike with friends in Yosemite I climbed to the top of the Mt Dana at 13,000 feet, the highest mountain in the Yosemite High Country. Sitting around the campfire that evening, I was struck with a bolt of enlightenment - I would not only survive, but could resume pretty much a normal, and rewarding life style.

I’m of Finnish American decent. In the Finnish language there is a word “SiSu”, I think every culture has a similar word. Loosely translated it means determination, spirit, resolve, tenacity, perseverance. I know that all the members of the Prostate Cancer Climb will have the Sisu to conquer Mt Aconcagua. I want to be on that team, and to help generate this feeling in men and their loved ones all over who are battling prostate cancer. I know that with your support we will not only generate awareness and hope, but also the urgently needed funds for research and education to eradicate this epidemic.

We can make a difference.

Sincerely,
Ken Malik
