Prostate Cancer Story
by Jim Cozad

When my best friend, Dallas, was diagnosed with Cancer, at the age of 47, and died within 4 months I was made aware of the fact that maybe I should have a physical. Much to my surprise, the doctor found a lump in my prostate and found that I had an elevated PSA.

I had many options to consider, but I chose to try and fight it with Shark Cartilage and nutritional supplements. After one year, I could not afford to attack it in this manner anymore so I looked at all of my other options.

The procedure I chose was Radiation Seed Implants. This was a new technique at the time but I knew it was the best choice for me.

Now 5 years later, I am still cancer free. My PSA has been excellent and I have had no signs of any cancer return.

The stress of the cancer returning is always there. Whenever I feel pain or see a strange bump, I wonder has it returned???

Because of the cost of fighting the cancer, I had to sell some property that I had on a water-ski lake in Bakersfield. The new business that I had just started also suffered because I was depressed and didn't feel that I could give it my 100%. I also had to quit water-skiing competitively because it also did not seem important anymore.

It has taken me several years to realize that Dallas' death saved my life. I now realize how lucky I am to still be here to see my daughter going to college and to talk to her about her dreams and goals. Most of all I cannot wait to teach my future grandkids how to water-ski!!!!

Support is so important during these times and I cannot say enough thanks to all of my friends & family. Because of them my mindset is better and I see life a lot different now. I am back to trying to live life to the fullest. I find it easier to let people know how I feel about them, because I realize just how precious life is and that it can end at any time. I have even taken up tournament water-skiing again and have actually qualified and skied in the U.S. National Championships.

Life can go on - it's up to you what you do with it. For me it is climbing a mountain in honor of all the men that did not get a second chance.

It took losing my best friend to make me aware. If we can touch a lot of men with the climb for prostate cancer and help them stop their cancer before it takes their life, then every step up that mountain is a step towards prostate awareness.

See you on the mountain!!
