PROSTATE CANCER CLIMB
Mount Aconcagua, Argentina - January, 2001
To Benefit
Hap Weyman Memorial Prostate Cancer Fund
of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute
Mount Aconcagua Climb Overview
Dr. Terry Weyman,
Expedition Leader and Organizer
Goal -
To climb the “Roof fo the Americas”, ACONCAGUA (22,841 feet) in
January of 2001 and in the process, raise money and international awareness
for Prostate Cancer.
Objective -
Raise over $1,000,000.00 through corporate and individual sponsors and
donors. This money will be funneled through the Prostate Cancer Research
Institute, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit public charity, established in the
name of My Father, Hap Weyman. The money will be designated for public
awareness, education on treatment and prevention, and research for continued
hopes for finding a cure. top

Team -
A team of mountaineers, climbers, guides and support staff will tackle
the mountain, which boarders Argentina and Chili on January 15, 2001 and
be on the mountain for three weeks. top

Media -
The event will be followed both by print and film media to document the
human drama and personal sacrifices the climbers are going through for
this cause. All the climbers have been chosen for personal issues or beliefs
in fighting for a disease that is still not talked about by many men.

Background -
Why Aconcagua? In 1995, a team of women, led by Peter Whittaker, and his
team from SUMMITS Adventure Travel, climbed the
highest mountain outside Asia (also highest non-technical mountain) to
raise money for breast cancer. This expedition entitled, Expedition
Inspiration raised over 2 million dollars for their cause. This climb
was seen by millions over network television and brought tears to my eyes.
In 1990 my father, Hap Weyman, died of Prostate Cancer. He had the yearly
physical, followed by proper diet and took care of his moral obligations.
Yet, he died from this disease because the lobe that the cancer affected
was not palpable through a digital exam and a PSA test was not administered.
When it was discovered, by myself and some colleagues through complaint
of back pain, it had already spread to the bones. Had he been aware to
ask for the blood test, been told he was in the risk age and given steps
towards prevention, or advances been made in treatment, he may be alive
today to see his grandchildren.
After witnessing Expedition Inspiration, I made it up in my mind
I wanted to repeat the climb to raise money and awareness for Prostate
Cancer. After a successful climb of Kilimanjaro along the Western Breech,
I knew I had it in me to climb “The Stone Sentinel”. Women will fight
for breast cancer and awareness while men will sit back in denial. I want
to bring to light all aspects of this disease and all the options men
have before, during and after diagnosis. top

Cost -
The goal is to find financial backing (sponsorship) to help with cost
of gear, permits, guides and airline costs for the team. I want the team
to look uniform with similar equipment and apparel. This will be good
for sponsors and expedition unity. top

The Guides -
SUMMITS Adventure
Travel was chosen for this expedition. It was chosen for their impeccable
safety record, Mr. Whittaker's connections in the field of mountaineering
(both through media, marketing, and product/supplies) and SUMMITS Adventure
Travel supplied the guides and services for Expedition Inspiration.
Instead of “re-inventing the climb”, I have chosen to use a group who
has already proven themselves in this form of arena. top

Proceeds of the Prostate Cancer Climb will go exclusively
to funding education and research. Distribution of the
Hap Weyman Memorial Prostate Cancer Project Fund will be determined by
the Independent Educational Research Funding Committee (IERFC).
